ART Institute January Undergraduate
Theatre Training Intensive

The American Repertory Theater's Institute for Advanced Theater Training is excited to invite members of the Harvard undergraduate community who are interested in theater to experience three weeks of graduate level training at the Institute during the January intersession. This ART Undergraduate intensive will be held from January 5 to January 24. Harvard University housing is being made available especially for participants in this event. Classes will meet between 9:00am and 1:00pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Classes will be drawn from the acting curriculum of the Institute for Advanced Theater Training and will include:

Shakespearean scene work with David Hammond
David Hammond is past head of the Professional Actor Training Program at UNC and Artistic Director of Playmakers Repertory Theater
On Camera with Jim True-Frost
Jim True-Frost is a member of the Steppenwolf Theater Company, was a cast member in HBO's "The Wire," and recently appeared on Broadway in "August:Osage County"
Viewpoints and Composition with Holly Derr
Holly Derr is a freelance director who graduated from the MFA Directing Program at Columbia. She teaches at the ART Institute and at Smith College
Dialects with Nancy Houfek
Nancy Houfek is the Head of Voice and Speech for the ART Institute
Advanced Meisner Repetition with Vocal and Physical Integration with Scott Zigler
Scott Zigler is the Director of the ART Institute
Outside-In Character Work with Marcus Stern
Marcus Stern is the Associate Director of the ART Institute
Workshop with Diane Paulus
Diane Paulus is the Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater
Theater History lecture with Dr. Anatoly Smeliansky, Dean of the Moscow Art Theatre School

Yoga for Actors with Jim True-Frost

Business of Acting Seminar covering such topics as the pros and cons of graduate school, agents and casting directors, the differences between working in New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.

Audition Workshop covering both monologues and reading from "sides"

Other classes to be announced

Students will also be taught a standard 30 minute vocal and physical warm-up over the course of the intensive


To apply for the intensive, email a brief statement(one paragraph, not more than a page) of your interest and a summary of any relevant experience to amrepinstitute@yahoo.com. You must apply for the intensive by Oct. 1. Students will be notified if they are being given a spot in the intensive by Oct. 5. Applications for university housing for January will be due Oct. 15. Information on applying for university housing will be sent with the notification of acceptance.

In addition to this general application, The A.R.T. Institute is accepting applications to serve as an Assistant Set Designer, Assistant Dramaturg, or Assistant Costume Designer on its production of Tennessee Williams' Stairs to the Roof. The production rehearses during the month of January and opens February 4th. Anyone interested in these positions should email a resume and statement of interest to A.R.T.
